PENS ARE WHAT WE SELL

Colorado Pen Direct are purveyors of fine writing instruments and accessories. We are not specialists to the 'collector' market. However, many of the brands and pens we offer are collected and sold to the 'collector' market.

We market fine writing instruments to professionals at all levels of business, government and to people who are interested for just their love of writing. A hugely diverse market. Consequently, we offer quality pens from as low as $4.95 (Pilot Varsity fountain pen) which satisfies a demand from our serious writing audience and tempts many into a first-time fountain pen writing experience.

We try to define "who you are and where you are in this spectrum"? Your needs and desires, that we perceive as listeners, are combined with our experience in selecting from the vast range of products available is what comprises our offer. That's a huge task. And we love it.

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF WRITING TECHNOLOGIES ARE OUT THERE?

Roller Ball
A majority of the time this pen will have a body and separate cap. Just like a fountain pen. This is primarily driven by the need of the liquid ink refill to be capped (sealed). Without capping the refill will begin to dry.

There are roller ball technology (meaning liquid ink) refills which do not need to be capped to perform. These are referred to as, "capless" roller balls. You will find roller ball pens available with this type of refill in twist-action bodies. These are sometimes referred to as Ballpoint convertibles (convertible to roller ball technology with the use of a capless roller ball refill).

There is now a technology which blends fountain pen writing and roller ball technology. In 2006, Monteverde introduced to the U.S. market the MEGA InkBall which is a roller ball tip that has a wick ink feeding system. Consequently, the pen uses and writes as a fountain pen but has no traditional nib.

Ballpoint
Ballpoints date to the early Twentieth Century. Moving from at the time the 'inconvenience' of a fountain pen to a pen which could be clicked to begin writing in just about any environment was seen as a huge breakthrough. Hence, the beginning of the demise of a fountain pen for common daily tasks and the widespread introduction of the ballpoint pen. From a cheap little jotter to a fine quality instrument, ballpoints assumed their place as the most common writing technology. Typically, a ballpoint refill will have a little crown at the top. This is the standard named, "Parker Style' (not the brand). 98% of ballpoints are Parker Style. This is how to identify a Parker Style

The downside of ballpoints today is the very same reason they first became popular; a wax based ink which had tremendous writeout (the total length of a line that can be expected from a single refill) capabilities. Unfortunately, this attribute also means an ink which must be pushed from the refill by exerting a fair amount of pressure on the tip. Many customers find this to be tiring on the hand and discover the ease allowed by roller ball writing to be vastly superior.

However, some customers find these attributes to be admired. Customers who write on multi-part forms or those which require an ink that will write in challenging environments like the Fisher Space Pen's upside down or in space ability. We don't have any astronauts as customers (that we are aware of) but we sure do sell a large quantity of Space Pens so…….

Fountain
The least understood of all the technologies. If one was to choose the primary reason for the existence of fountain pen writing it would be simply the fun and enjoyment of the interaction with the 'tool' and the creative result it produces. That's our opinion. Just plain fun with pens and inks. The range of color choices arcross the brands of bottles ink is nearly endless. Many of our customers will try brand after brand until they fall in love with exactly the blue/black they desire. Fountain pens can be filled in three ways. With a cartridge of ink, with ink from a bottle which is drawn into the 'converter', or with ink drawn into an internal reservoir called a bladder. Some fountain pens are only this latter type and are usually referred to as 'piston fill only'. Meaning they will not accept a cartridge or converter as they have only provided for an internal reservoir in their design. Some very high-end fountain pens (above say $300) are only available as piston-fill.

The vast majority of fountain pens are cartridge or converter filled. Ask if you don't know as this will determine your choice of inks (bottled only) or the convenience of cartridges.

Refills for fountain pens. Most fountain pens have been designed for an 'international' cartridge. This refers to the length and the fitment of the cartridge into the fountain pen's ink feed system. Examples of brands which use the common international cartridge would be Pelikan, Montblanc, Delta, Aurora, Monteverde, Rotring, Romet, Cartier and Waterford. Some brands require their own proprietary cartridge. Examples would be Lamy, Cross, Waterman, Sheaffer, Pilot and Parker.

Pencil
The mechanical pencil is fast disappearing. Brands which in the past have offered a pencil as the fourth option have dropped this and restricted the pencil to in many cases one option; black. Too bad, as we have many customers who are devoted pencil writers.

Pencils vary generally only in the size of the graphite used, the look, and mechanical quality. Common options are .5. .7 and .9mm. We occasionally have some 1.1mm pencils. The traditional pencil has been expanded however into the 'multi-pen category and is available often in combination with other ballpoint and pda tips.

Multi-Pen
Road warrior territory. Many busy multi-taskers desire the ability to write in multiple colors, modes and even technologies. Hence, the multi-pen. Typically, a multi-pen will have two ballpoint tips, one each in blue and black, a pencil and a pda tip. This would comprise a 'four pen'. Some brands will even throw in an additional ballpoint color and the total will be five points contained within the single pen. Sheaffer even has a multi-pen which is a combination ballpoint and highlighter. Monteverde has a pen named M3 which on one end is a ballpoint and at the other it is either a MEGA InkBall liquid ink roller ball or a full fledged fountain pen nib. You choose. The choices will continue to expand.
