Homage to Thomas Jefferson
The LeBoeuf Pen Company is proud to honor Thomas Jefferson and his writing of the Declaration of Independence with this elegant Limited Edition consisting of 176 fountain and rollerball pens. This pen joins the 20 pen Icon Collection.
Thomas Jefferson, considered to be eloquent as a correspondent, but not so as a public speaker. In the Virginia House of Burgesses and the Continental Congress, he contributed his pen rather than his voice to the patriot cause. As the “silent member” of the Congress, Jefferson, was known for his writing skill and was chosen to draft the Declaration of Independence. Over the course of seventeen days, Jefferson wrote the draft in isolation. The second Continental Congress then spent two days making changes to the document, debating and revising it on July 2nd and 3rd. On July 4th, 1776, Congress ratified and adopted the document. The formal document was signed by 56 members of Congress on August 2, 1776.
As a reluctant candidate for President in 1796, Jefferson came within three votes of election. Through a flaw in the Constitution, he became Vice President, although an opponent of President Adams.
When Jefferson assumed the Presidency, the crisis in France had passed. He slashed Army and Navy expenditures, cut the budget, eliminated the tax on whiskey so unpopular in the West, yet reduced the national debt by a third. He also sent a naval squadron to fight the Barbary pirates, who were harassing American commerce in the Mediterranean.
Upon the completion of his second term, Jefferson retired to Monticello to ponder such projects as his grand designs for the University of Virginia. He died at Monticello on July 4, 1826.
